Binge eating disorder is more prevalent in women than men, and studies have shown that the illness is as prevalent in racial or ethnic minority groups as it is in Caucasians.
We don't know a lot about the way in which binge eating disorder develops, although it can occur in childhood.
It leads to weight gain and increased body fat in children and adolescents and may evolve into another type of eating disorder as time passes.
It is important to note that the disorder itself is distinct from obesity, and that only a small percent of obese people engage in regular binge eating.
Patients with BED have higher rates of overall impairment when compared to weight matched individuals and lower overall stated quality of life. The tend to suffer from low self-esteem, social anxiety, and depression.
Although patients with BED struggle with rates of depression and anxiety disorders that are comparable to anorexia and bulimia nervosa, they appear to have higher recovery rates than either anorexia or bulimia.
